Both women and young men were considered normal objects of desire, but outside marriage a man was supposed to act on his desires with only slaves, prostitutes (who were often slaves), and the infames. ![]() The morality of the behavior depended on the social standing of the partner, not gender per se. It was expected and socially acceptable for a freeborn Roman man to want sex with both female and male partners, as long as he took the penetrative role. Allowing himself to be penetrated threatened his liberty as a free citizen as well as his sexual integrity. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, scholars have tended to view expressions of Roman male sexuality in terms of a "penetrator-penetrated" binary model that is, the proper way for a Roman male to seek sexual gratification was to insert his penis into his partner. Williams has noted, "the prime directive of masculine sexual behavior for Romans". Roman ideals of masculinity were thus premised on taking an active role that was also, as Craig A. Sexual conquest was a common metaphor for imperialism in Roman discourse, and the " conquest mentality" was part of a "cult of virility" that particularly shaped Roman homosexual practices. Virtus, "valor" as that which made a man most fully a man, was among the active virtues. Roman society was patriarchal (see paterfamilias), and masculinity was premised on a capacity for governing oneself and others of lower status. 117–138 AD), his loverĭuring the Republic, a Roman citizen's political liberty ( libertas) was defined in part by the right to preserve his body from physical compulsion, including both corporal punishment and sexual abuse. However, there is scattered evidence - for example, a couple of spells in the Greek Magical Papyri - which attests to the existence of individual women in Roman-ruled provinces in the later Imperial period who fell in love with members of the same sex. Same-sex relations among women are far less documented and, if Roman writers are to be trusted, female homoeroticism may have been very rare, to the point that Ovid, in the Augustine era describes it as "unheard-of". Although Roman men in general seem to have preferred youths between the ages of 12 and 20 as sexual partners, freeborn male minors were off limits at certain periods in Rome, though professional prostitutes and entertainers might remain sexually available well into adulthood. Acceptable male partners were slaves and former slaves, prostitutes, and entertainers, whose lifestyle placed them in the nebulous social realm of infamia, excluded from the normal protections accorded to a citizen even if they were technically free. Roman men were free to enjoy sex with other males without a perceived loss of masculinity or social status, as long as they took the dominant or penetrative role. The conquest mentality and "cult of virility" shaped same-sex relations. "Virtue" ( virtus) was seen as an active quality through which a man ( vir) defined himself. Roman society was patriarchal, and the freeborn male citizen possessed political liberty ( libertas) and the right to rule both himself and his household ( familia). The primary dichotomy of ancient Roman sexuality was active/ dominant/masculine and passive/submissive/feminine. Latin lacks words that would precisely translate " homosexual" and " heterosexual". Homosexuality in ancient Rome often differs markedly from the contemporary West. Roman mosaic from Susa, Libya, depicting the myth of Zeus in the form of an eagle abducting the boy Ganymede

12/11/2022 0 Comments Director of a dogs purposeOddly enough, though, he’s not had a girlfriend since Hannah. But wait! This dog finds freedom, and eventually finds Ethan, who has grown up to look just like Dennis Quaid. Then there’s the dog adopted by a rural punk rock chick-they’re the worst-whose neglect is so dire it can barely be voiceovered. (And yeah, that water does look damn scary, for German Shepherd or human or whoever.) There’s the ice-cream loving Corgi (I think) who helps find romance for his over-studious mistress (Kirby Howell Baptiste). This one has the misfortune of having to chase a kidnapper (who’s also an acrobat, given his police-evading climbing abilities) who’s brought his victim to a reservoir, and proves a hero in the noblest and kind of depressing way possible. There’s the German Shepherd police dog (the one in the TMZ video) whose human master is lonesome. Then Bailey dies, and the movie’s next hour is about the different forms the dog takes before finding his ultimate purpose. All of Ethan’s All-American hopes and dreams and optimism are snatched from him, and off he goes to a lonely life at agricultural school. (This is all the more disturbing since, if you’ve been following the cause and effect action closely, it’s strongly implied that the guy lost his job partially on account of the dog’s bad behavior.) Ethan’s envious, resentful football teammate pulls a prank that causes appalling damage. Dad’s hard drinking becomes full-blown shambling and striking-out alcoholism. (Not actually true no “Hangover” writers were employed in the making of this film.) Just what the world needs, “Old Yeller” rewritten by “ The Hangover” team. In voiceover, Bailey says “My butt itches.” Great. She grabs the dog by his shiny, lustrous scuff and scratches under his neck. ![]() Teenage Ethan eventually meets a girl, Hannah ( Britt Robertson), and the cutie is charmed by Bailey, who’s curious about her and her smell. When the humor isn’t overstated, it’s kinda inappropriate. Things move amiably enough, but the slapstick involving rambunctious Bailey (for so is the pup named) often escalates to a level that would get another dog sent to two weeks at a training camp or something. ![]() Along comes young Ethan and his feisty mom ( Juliet Rylance) to rescue the pup, give him water, and adopt him, despite the doubts of good-natured but hard-drinking traveling salesman dad. Nevertheless, this idyllic depiction of America when it was Great Before features rogue sanitation workers who come upon a Red Retriever puppy and reckon they can make a few bucks selling it … only they leave it to dehydrate in their vehicle as they go to lunch. ![]() Co-produced by Amblin, Steven Spielberg’s production shingle, it begins in a Michigan early 1960’s that’s been production-design burnished to a nostalgic fare-thee-well. And that one dog, the one whose voiceover is enthusiastically articulated by Josh Gad, gets reincarnated a sufficient number of times to fulfill the purpose of redeeming the existence of his former master. No, it is meant to be an inspirational tale based on the notion that dogs exist to be of service to humans. But “A Dog’s Purpose,” directed by Lasse Hallström, who also directed “My Life as a Dog” (not really a dog movie) and “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” (absolutely a dog movie), is not supposed to be a realistic depiction of the misfortune our differently-individuated fellow creatures fall into in this world. Don’t even get me started on that pig in Bertolucci’s “1900,” although I presume he was enjoyed by those who eventually ate him in the form of tasty sausage. On the other hand, that girl slapping the cat around in “Satantango” was really slapping a cat around, and somehow I don’t think the horse that was standing on the platform of the wooden staircase that collapsed in “Andrei Rublev” got up and trotted away. 12/11/2022 0 Comments 7 sins and 7 virtues![]() Above, an angel sends a soul to hell on Christ’s command. Below him to his right are the Seven Deadly Sins, personified by a naked man surrounded by scenes of each sin emerging from the mouths of dragons. Christ is depicted at the highest point, atop a cloud, performing judgement from the heavens. A famous example is found at Trotton in West Sussex, where the Last Judgement mural on the west (back) wall of the church, dating to the last two decades of the fourteenth century, presents the Seven Deadly Sins leading directly to damnation. Paintings of the Seven Deadly Sins in churches would warn the worshipper of the danger and help them to gain protection against Purgatory and Hell. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the ever-present threat of death and subsequent fear for the fate of one’s soul became a widespread theme in art and literature. The scale and suddenness of the pandemic, with its estimated 30-60% mortality rate, made this fear a very pressing issue. Dying without fully confessing one’s sins was greatly feared, since it would lead straight to hell. The Black Death in the middle of the fourteenth century seems to have increased the prevalence of the Seven Deadly Sins motif, as preparing for death and the afterlife became a primary concern. For discussion of such images, see this article (More minor sins, called venial sins, could be forgiven without the sacrament of confession, as long as the sinner had made a sincere resolution to reform their behaviour.) Confessing sins was not just about punishment: it encouraged regular self-reflection, and the act of penance and the provocation of shame was believed to bring the soul closer to God and reclaim individuals from a life of sin.Ī tree of the Seven Deadly Sins and their fruits ( BL Arundel MS. By confessing their Deadly Sins, the perpetrator could achieve complete absolution and a penance to perform as atonement. The sins were so frequently expounded and depicted in art that it is likely everyone would understand them. Lay people and clergy alike needed tools for recalling and identifying the sins to be confessed, and the numerical device of the Seven Deadly Sins proved very popular. Clearly it was extremely important for every member of the laity and clergy to protect both themselves and/ or their parishioners from spiritual death and eternal damnation. The Council added ‘let this salutary decree be published frequently in the churches, that no one may find in the plea of ignorance a shadow of excuse’. The Council stated that the worshippers should ‘faithfully confess all their sins at least once a year to their own (parish) priest and perform to the best of their ability the penance imposed’, the priest ‘carefully inquiring into the circumstances of the sinner and sin’. After the Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 advised annual confession and gave the church greater authority for the remittance of sins, this definition of sin began to appear more frequently in popular literature, sermons, and guides for confessors. A rationale was evolved to explain why seven (a number of great religious significance) and why those specific sins (a tricky matter to prove), and subsets of vices were added to each sin. By the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Gregory’s list was being defended, deliberated, and extensively explained. The idea of enumerating sins in this way originated in the early medieval period, and the motif of the Seven Deadly Sins in particular relies on a list made by Pope Gregory I in 590. As Dan Jon Gaytrygge’s mid-fourteenth century sermon expressed it, ‘For als the venym of the neddire slaas manes body, swa the venym of syn slaas manes saule’ (‘for as the venom of the adder slays man’s body, so the venom of sin slays man’s soul.’) All were believed to fatally affect the individual’s spiritual health. Then came the vices related to the flesh: sloth, then gluttony, avarice, and lust. It was followed by the ‘spiritual’ vices, envy and wrath. Pride, the most demonic sin from which sprung the rest, came first. The sins were Superbia, Avaritia, Luxuria, Ira, Gula, Invidia, and Acedia, now generally understood as Pride, Avarice (or Covetousness), Lust, Wrath (Anger), Gluttony, Envy, and Sloth (Laziness). The motif of the Seven Deadly Sins was extremely popular in the late medieval period, featuring in everything from literature, hymns, sermons, and manuals to wall paintings, manuscripts, and morality plays.
